Research Programme

The focus of this research programme is

  • Understanding the mechanisms involved in placental uptake, metabolism and transfer of nutrients from the mother to the fetus.
  • Understanding the role of growth factors in regulating cell survival, growth and apoptosis in the placenta and its effect on feto-placental growth and development.
  • Studies on placental mechanisms leading to preterm birth and preeclampsia.

Research projects:

Extramural

On-going project:

  • Title: Pro-neurotrophins/p75 NTR signaling contributes to increased apoptosis in preterm placentae
  • Funded by: Dept. of Science and Technology
  • Role: Principal Investigator
  • Duration: June 2017-20

This study is planned to examine the placental expression of pro-NGF and its receptor p75NTR in preterm pregnancy and further to study the association of pro-NGF: mature NGF ratio with placental apoptosis.

Completed project:

  • Title: Epigenetic regulation of matrix metalloproteinases in preterm placenta.
  • Funded by: Dept. of Science and Technology
  • Role: Principal Investigator
  • Duration: Feb 2012-15

This study showed an imbalance in matrix metalloproteinases (MMP-1, -2, -3,-9) and their tissue inhibitors (TIMP-1, TIMP-2) which possibly favors premature upregulation of matrix metalloproteinases leading to extracellular remodeling in the placenta thereby leading to preterm delivery. Further, we have reported differential effect of mode of delivery (vaginal Vs caesarean) on MMP levels in preterm placenta for the first time.

Intramural:

  • Title: Regional Fatty acid Metabolism and Transport in Preeclampsia Placentae.

This study is planned to understand whether long chain polyunsaturated fatty acid (LCPUFA) metabolism and transfer is altered in different regions of the placentae in women with preeclampsia.
